HISTORY

The school was formed in 1970 and was called the Department of Thermal and Environmental Engineering. In 1971 the program was accredited by ECPD (ABET) as a Mechanical Engineering program. There were 8 Faculty members at that time. In 1984 the name of the school was changed to the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Energy Processes.  There are now 14 Faculty members including the Chair and the Director of the Coal Research Center. The school offers B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and participates in the College-wide Ph.D. program in Engineering Science.

Mission

The mission of the School of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Materials Engineering is to provide high quality engineering education to students and equip them with lifelong learning skills, which allow them to adapt to changing work environment throughout their careers. Also, the School of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Materials Engineering supports Faculty growth and development through research and creative activities because quality teaching and service to humanity and society cannot be achieved without such activities. Finally, the School of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Materials Engineering supports the ideal of service to school, college, university, professional societies and community as part of the mission.

Welcome from the Director

Welcome to the School of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Materials Engineering at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. The school offers the Bachelor of Science, accredited by ABET-Engineering Accreditation Commission, Master of Science (MS), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Mechanical Engineering, and participates in the College-wide Doctoral (Ph.D.) program in Engineering Science. The school currently has 169 BS, 25 MS and 9 Ph.D. students in the program.

The school has high-quality, dedicated faculty members who deliver outstanding teaching and conduct research that impacts national and international needs in the areas of:

  • Mechanical Design and Systems
  • Thermal and Fluid Science
  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Materials Science and Engineering
  • Energy Engineering

The faculty receives millions of dollars for research funding from various industries, as well as federal and state funding agencies. Our distinguished faculty makes us one of the most diverse schools in the state. Our students may take technical elective courses in the thrust areas of mechanical systems, thermal and fluid engineering/science, aerospace engineering, materials science and engineering, and energy engineering. Our students demonstrate their outstanding abilities by participating in: Formula SAE Race Car, NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge, and Design Challenge competitions.
